Cellular Automata are a standard research tool in systems theory and computer science -- we'll bypass that and look at them instead as a source of visual patterns. This workshop will survey the basics of 1- and 2-dimensional CA systems and examine standard CAs like the voting algorithm and Conway's Game of Life. We'll also look at trading off between neighborhood size and number of states, and how this gives a way to translate any CA system into actual jigsaw puzzle pieces. Attendees should be able to read and edit Javascript programs; we'll be modifying example programs to explore different CA rule sets.

We have a limited number of scholarships for our workshops. If you need an application, please send an email to with your complete name and contact information.
